Mathias Döpfner

Mathias Döpfner, born in 1963, is the Chairman, CEO and a 22% shareholder of Axel Springer SE in Berlin.


Axel Springer is one of the leading digital publishers in the US with brands such as INSIDER, MORNING BREW, and POLITICO. And the largest European media outlet with publications like WELT, BILD, and Upday.


Mathias studied German literature, theater, and musicology in Frankfurt and Boston. He started his career as a journalist in 1982. And joined Axel Springer SE in 1998, initially as editor-in-chief of WELT. He has been CEO since January 2002 and focused on the digital transformation of the company ever since. Under his leadership, Axel Springer introduced paid content models and diversified revenue streams through strategic investments. Today, over 80% of the group’s revenues come from its digital activities.


Besides his directorship of Netflix, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Warner Music Group, and holds honorary offices at, among others, the American Jewish Committee and the steering committee of the Bilderberg conference.
